Dhaka, February 15. In a significant gesture of political goodwill, Bangladesh’s Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus has penned a heartfelt letter to Dr. Shafiqur Rahman, the Amir of Jamaat-e-Islami, expressing profound gratitude for the party’s role in maintaining peace during the recent 13th National Parliamentary elections.
Yunus’s representative formally delivered the letter, which commended Rahman and his party for their active participation in the electoral process. ‘From the campaign trail to the announcement of results, your political decorum, restraint, and wise statements, along with efforts to keep party workers peaceful, played a crucial role in national stability,’ Yunus wrote.
The Chief Adviser highlighted Jamaat-e-Islami’s constructive support, advice, and cooperation during his interim government’s tenure. He emphasized Bangladesh’s current challenges, including global economic pressures, technological shifts, climate change, human resource development, and social justice.
‘To strengthen democracy with greater participation and institutional robustness, responsible roles from both government and opposition are essential,’ Yunus stated. He expressed hope that under Rahman’s leadership, Jamaat-e-Islami would serve as a constructive opposition in parliament and the broader political arena, fostering principled debates, legislative consultations, representation of public aspirations, and ensuring state accountability.
Yunus concluded with confidence in Rahman’s continued efforts to bolster national unity, calling it the country’s greatest strength. He prayed for Rahman’s good health, long life, and full recovery.
This exchange underscores a maturing political landscape in Bangladesh, where even ideological opponents prioritize stability and democratic norms amid transitional challenges.
