CHENNAI – The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Chennai has predicted the formation of a low-pressure area over the southeast Bay of Bengal, setting the stage for potential weather shifts in Tamil Nadu. This upper-air cyclonic circulation currently lingers over the equatorial Indian Ocean and adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal areas.
Meteorologists expect this system to intensify around February 16, influencing weather patterns across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal. While dry conditions are likely to prevail from February 15 to 18, isolated light showers could sprinkle one or two spots in Tamil Nadu on February 19 and 20.
Officials emphasize that widespread rainfall isn’t on the cards, but the system’s speed and strength could trigger localized changes. Coastal communities and fishermen are urged to monitor updates closely as the Bay of Bengal developments unfold.
Adding to the mix, moderate fog is forecast for several northern districts. On February 15, Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kanchipuram, and Chengalpattu may wake up to hazy mornings. This fog is expected to persist and spread to Villupuram and Cuddalore by February 16.
Low visibility during early hours could disrupt road travel, particularly on highways and suburban routes. Drivers are advised to proceed with caution, using fog lights and maintaining safe distances.
The weather department will keep a watchful eye on the low-pressure system’s evolution, issuing timely advisories. Residents should stay tuned to official channels for the latest on any significant pattern shifts, ensuring safety amid these transitional weather conditions.
