New Delhi witnessed a shocking incident at Delhi University where a female social media influencer was allegedly assaulted amid a heated protest. National Human Rights Commission member Priyank Kanungo has taken a firm stand, declaring that any insult to women will not be tolerated and the perpetrators will face legal consequences.
Posting on X, Kanungo highlighted the violent misconduct against the woman journalist at DU. ‘We are taking cognizance of the complaint regarding the violent misbehavior with a female journalist at Delhi University. The goons will be dealt with lawfully. Insulting women is absolutely unacceptable,’ he stated emphatically.
The controversy erupted during protests supporting the UGC Equity Regulation 2026, which is currently under Supreme Court scrutiny. Demonstrators reportedly misbehaved with the influencer, prompting outrage. Later that evening, another group of students rallied for justice outside the Maurice Nagar police station in North Delhi.
Delhi University Vice-Chancellor Yogesh Singh addressed the unrest on Saturday, urging teachers and students to maintain harmony. ‘I request all DU teachers and students to preserve mutual goodwill. Avoid activities that foster discord and tarnish the university’s and nation’s image,’ he said.
Singh described the previous day’s events as deeply concerning, emphasizing DU’s diverse student body from across India. ‘Social harmony is paramount, and it’s our collective duty to uphold it,’ he added. The VC revealed discussions with student groups, faculty, and police to prevent future incidents.
He also reassured stakeholders about the UGC regulations pending court verdict, appealing for trust in the government and patience for the Supreme Court’s decision. This episode underscores ongoing tensions at DU over policy changes, with authorities now focused on restoring peace and ensuring women’s safety on campus.
