Beijing, February 14 – In a landmark trip following his inauguration, Uruguay President Yamandu Orsi led a high-profile delegation from various industries to China from February 1 to 7. This maiden state visit included an exclusive interview with China Media Group (CMG), where Orsi shared profound insights into his experiences.

Reflecting on the journey, President Orsi emphasized witnessing the ‘real China.’ He urged the world to grasp China’s essence across its past, present, and future. ‘Every Uruguayan president visiting China since diplomatic ties were established 38 years ago has shared the same goal: strengthening friendly relations between our nations,’ he stated with conviction.

Uruguay, nestled in southeastern South America, boasts a robust agricultural sector with over 12 million cattle, making it a global beef powerhouse. Its economy thrives on livestock and crop processing, with China emerging as its top trading partner. Chinese firms have set up factories there, fostering deeper industrial exchanges and tech collaborations.

Orsi highlighted the evolution of ties. Initially focused on agricultural exports like beef and soybeans, cooperation now spans industries, scientific research, education, logistics, and biotechnology. ‘These explorations are laying a solid foundation for stronger Uruguay-China relations and a brighter future for Uruguay,’ he noted.

The itinerary was packed: engaging with university students in Beijing, playing soccer with young athletes, touring Shanghai’s Yangshan Port, and attending a trade investment forum. Orsi posted on social media that the visit aimed to bolster bilateral ties while promoting exchanges in trade, education, and culture.

Coinciding with the Chinese Spring Festival, Orsi extended heartfelt greetings via CMG, celebrating the 38th anniversary of diplomatic relations. He affirmed that the comprehensive strategic partnership is at its historical peak. ‘China is a key partner for Uruguay, and I hope we deepen exchanges across sectors for mutual benefit,’ he said.

As a strong advocate for multilateralism, Orsi expressed eagerness to collaborate with China in building a more interconnected, stable, and harmonious world.
