In a shocking incident that has gripped Mumbai, a massive concrete slab from a Metro construction site in Mulund collapsed onto a moving auto-rickshaw, claiming one life and injuring several others. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has expressed profound grief over the tragedy and swiftly ordered a thorough investigation into the mishap.
The accident occurred around 12:20 PM on Saturday along LBS Road in Mulund West, a bustling artery of the city. Eyewitnesses described a horrifying scene as the slab plummeted from a Metro pillar, completely smashing the auto-rickshaw and damaging a nearby car. The impact was so severe that the three-wheeler was reduced to wreckage.
Emergency services, including the Mumbai Fire Brigade, local police, Metro staff, and municipal corporation officials, rushed to the spot upon receiving reports. Four individuals sustained serious injuries, with one succumbing to his wounds. The deceased has been identified as Ramdhun Yadav. The injured include Rajkumar Indrajit Yadav, whose condition remains critical, Mahendra Pratap Yadav, and Deepa Ruhiya.
Speaking to the media, DCP Mumbai Hemraj Singh Rajput assured strict action against those responsible. ‘The concrete part of the under-construction Metro bridge fell, resulting in one death and three injuries. All injured have been hospitalized,’ he stated.
From the Chief Minister’s Office, an official post on X detailed the government’s response. CM Fadnavis has directed a high-level probe to uncover lapses in safety protocols at the construction site. In a gesture of solidarity, the state government announced Rs 5 lakh compensation for the family of the deceased and will cover all medical expenses for the injured. The CM also prayed for the speedy recovery of those hurt.
This incident raises serious questions about construction safety in Mumbai’s ambitious Metro projects, which are crucial for easing the city’s notorious traffic woes. Authorities have promised accountability, but for the grieving families, no amount of aid can replace the irreplaceable loss. As investigations unfold, Mumbaikars await assurances that such disasters won’t recur.
