New Delhi, February 14: West Indies’ former captain Jason Holder has opened up about the harsh realities of leadership in cricket, admitting that the burdens of captaincy caught him off guard at a tender age. Appointed skipper at just 23, Holder reflected on his decision during an interview on GeoSuper, revealing he might have turned down the role had he known the full extent of responsibilities beyond the field.

Holder, who led West Indies through turbulent times, explained that his initial view of captaincy was limited to on-field tactics and player management. ‘I didn’t realize how much work lay outside the boundary—dealing with selections, contracts, and off-field politics,’ he said. The all-rounder candidly shared that navigating these challenges was overwhelming, especially early in his career.

Despite the difficulties, Holder holds no regrets about the growth it brought. ‘That experience shaped me into who I am today,’ he noted, adding that with hindsight, he would have delayed taking on the mantle to better prepare for leading a nation. His tenure included the rocky 2016 World T20 campaign, where team issues with kits and contracts nearly derailed their participation. Yet, they rallied, clinched the title, and proved their mettle.

Holder’s drive has always been to elevate West Indies cricket from its persistent woes. From dressing room culture to overall direction, he aimed to leave the team stronger. Though challenges persist, his passion remains. Meanwhile, the current West Indies side is thriving in the 2026 T20 World Cup qualifiers, topping their group with two wins, echoing the resilience Holder instilled.
