Guwahati is witnessing a bold crackdown as Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma vows a zero-tolerance policy against illegal encroachments. Speaking on Friday, Sarma emphasized that the government’s drive goes beyond reclaiming government and forest lands—it’s a direct assault on the criminal networks that flourished under previous administrations.
In a strongly worded social media post, the CM highlighted how encroachers had turned protected forest areas into hubs for unlawful activities over the years. ‘These encroachments posed a grave threat to Assam’s environmental security, law and order, and overall development,’ he stated. Sarma’s administration is now reversing decades of neglect with unwavering resolve.
The ongoing eviction drives across multiple districts form a key pillar of the ‘Safe Assam’ strategy. Reclaiming encroached lands is crucial not just for forest protection but also for preserving biodiversity and restoring ecological balance in the state.
But the government’s efforts don’t stop at evictions. Sarma made it clear: ‘We are dismantling all sources of crime.’ Illegal settlements, he noted, often serve as breeding grounds for organized crime, smuggling, and other threats to public safety.
In recent months, Assam has intensified operations in wildlife sanctuaries and government properties, reclaiming hundreds of hectares. This multi-pronged approach signals a new era of governance focused on security, sustainability, and progress. As these campaigns continue, residents are hopeful for a cleaner, safer Assam.
