Patna, February 13: In a major relief for Purnea’s independent MP Rajesh Ranjan alias Pappu Yadav, the Patna MP-MLA Court granted him bail in three pending cases on Friday. With this, all legal hurdles have been cleared, paving the way for his release from Beur Jail at any moment.
Supporters of the firebrand leader erupted in joy as news of the bail spread like wildfire. Pappu Yadav was arrested on February 6 from his Mandiri residence in Patna by Gardanibagh police in connection with a 31-year-old case. The arrest triggered immediate protests by his followers, leading to heated exchanges with the police and even a fresh FIR against him.
Post-arrest, Yadav’s health deteriorated sharply. He was first rushed to Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (IGIMS) and later referred to Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH). Based on medical reports, he was eventually shifted to Beur Jail.
Earlier on February 10, the court had granted him bail in the decades-old Gardanibagh case. However, when produced before the MP-MLA Court, he appeared frail, wheeled in on a chair. While bail was already secured in one case, judicial custody was ordered in three others: a 2016-17 Kotwali case, Kotwali case no. 113/19, and Buddha Colony case no. 72/26 related to obstructing government work during post-arrest protests.
Court proceedings faced multiple disruptions, including bomb threat hoaxes at Patna Civil Court that halted hearings repeatedly. On Thursday, tight security escorted Yadav to court, but a lawyer’s sudden death caused further delays.
Undeterred by these obstacles, the court heard final arguments on Friday and approved bail in the remaining three cases. Pappu Yadav’s release now seems imminent, marking a significant turn in his ongoing legal battles. His supporters are gearing up for grand celebrations once he steps out of jail.
