Kolkata’s political arena is heating up as Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari accuses the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) of launching desperate attacks on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) driven by mounting fears of electoral loss in West Bengal. Speaking on Friday, Adhikari pointed to a series of vandalism incidents targeting BJP symbols across various assembly constituencies as stark evidence of TMC’s panic.
In a pointed social media post on X, Adhikari shared a video capturing individuals in the Beleghata (East) assembly segment of South 24 Parganas district methodically erasing BJP slogans from walls. ‘You can’t stop BJP in West Bengal like this,’ he declared, alleging that TMC workers deliberately wiped out BJP writings on walls near booths 156 and 157 in Ward 122 of the area.
Adhikari condemned these actions as deplorable attempts to silence the opposition in a democratic nation. He directly targeted Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, demanding a level playing field for all political parties. ‘Erasing wall writings won’t erase BJP’s ideology from people’s hearts,’ he asserted, emphasizing that public support remains the party’s greatest strength.
The BJP leader vowed that voters would use their democratic right to ballot and deliver justice against such injustices. He warned that the politics of fear and intimidation in West Bengal cannot persist indefinitely. This isn’t the first time Adhikari has highlighted such vandalism; just days earlier on February 11, he posted another video showing BJP flags being torn and burned in the Bhowanipore assembly seat, Mamata Banerjee’s own constituency.
Adhikari urged all political parties to engage peacefully, stressing that such hooliganism has no place in democracy. As tensions escalate ahead of future polls, his statements underscore a deepening rift between Bengal’s two major parties, with BJP positioning itself as the bulwark against TMC’s alleged authoritarian tactics. The coming months will test whether these accusations resonate with the electorate.
