In a remarkable turnaround for Uttar Pradesh’s traditional artisans, the One District One Product (ODOP) scheme launched under Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has created over 3.16 lakh employment opportunities since 2018. This initiative has not only revitalized local crafts but also boosted the state’s economy, pushing exports from Rs 86,000 crore in 2017-18 to a staggering Rs 1.84 lakh crore.

The scheme provides comprehensive support including free training, advanced toolkits, and financial aid to 1.31 lakh artisans. Under the Chief Minister’s Accident Insurance Scheme, they receive up to Rs 5 lakh coverage. Minister Rakesh Sachan highlighted during the 2026-27 budget session that ODOP has given new identity to traditional producers, with specific successes like 2,275 artisans in Saharanpur receiving upgraded tools and Rs 16.26 crore in margin money to 454 handicraft workers.

Financial commitment underscores the government’s dedication: Rs 135 crore of the Rs 145 crore budgeted last year was disbursed, with this year’s allocation hiked to Rs 200 crore. Notably, 79 products have earned GI tags, enhancing global branding.

Beyond economics, ODOP fosters cultural revival. Artisans are linked to Ayushman Bharat for health coverage and education facilities. Complementary initiatives like One District One Dish further amplify local identities, marking ODOP as a holistic empowerment drive.
