In the world of para-athletics, few stories inspire as profoundly as that of Varun Singh Bhati. Born on February 13, 1995, in Noida, this remarkable athlete faced unimaginable challenges from infancy. Stricken with polio at just six months old, he developed a permanent disability in one leg, exacerbated by incorrect medication. Yet, his family’s unwavering support transformed potential despair into unyielding determination.
Varun’s passion for sports ignited early. Basketball captivated him initially, but he soon set his sights on high jump, training alongside able-bodied athletes to sharpen his competitive edge. Under the guidance of former national athlete Satyanarayan, his skills soared. The GoSports Foundation’s Para Champions Program provided crucial backing, propelling him toward international glory.
Competing in the T42 category, Varun marked his breakthrough in 2012 with a 1.60-meter jump, securing the ‘A’ qualification for the London Paralympics—though limited slots kept him out. Undeterred, he claimed gold at the 2014 China Open and shone at the Asian Para Games that year.
2016 proved transformative. At the IPC Asia-Oceania Championships, his 1.82-meter leap clinched gold and set an Asian record. Then, at the Rio Paralympics, a personal best of 1.86 meters earned him bronze, etching his name in India’s sporting history. Subsequent triumphs included bronze at the 2017 World Para Athletics Championships and silver at the 2018 Asian Para Games with 1.82 meters.
Recognizing his excellence, the Government of India honored Varun with the Arjuna Award on August 29, 2018. His journey from a polio-afflicted infant to Paralympic medalist exemplifies resilience, hard work, and the triumph of the human spirit, inspiring countless others to overcome adversity.
