MUMBAI – England suffered a 30-run defeat against West Indies at Wankhede Stadium on Wednesday, with the Caribbean spinners dismantling their batting lineup. Despite the collapse, England vice-captain Harry Brook remained unfazed, insisting he’s not disappointed with how his batters faced the turning ball.
In the post-match press conference, Brook stated, ‘I’m not disappointed with the way our batters played against spin. We’ll go back, reflect on it, and be back in action in a few days.’ His words came after a match where West Indies spinners dominated, claiming six key wickets in just 12 overs.
Brook himself fell to Gudakesh Motie, caught off his own bowling after a promising start. Teammates Jos Buttler, Jacob Bethell, Tom Banton, Will Jacks, and Jamie Overton also succumbed to spin, highlighting England’s vulnerability on a pitch offering turn.
Motie led the charge with 3-33 in four overs, while Roston Chase picked up 2-29 and Akeal Hosein grabbed 1-32. Their tight lines and variations created relentless pressure, forcing England into errors during the chase.
West Indies posted 196/6 batting first after England won the toss and bowled. Sherfane Rutherford’s unbeaten 76 off 42 balls powered their total. England managed 166/10 in 19 overs, with Sam Curran’s unbeaten 43 off 30 the lone resistance.
This loss follows a gritty win over Nepal, raising concerns about England’s readiness for the T20 World Cup. Brook’s optimism suggests confidence in quick adjustments ahead of tougher challenges.
