Patna’s political arena is heating up as opposition leaders intensify their criticism of the state’s law and order situation. RJD MLA Bhai Virendra sparked controversy on Wednesday by accusing Bihar Police of selectively targeting criminals from the Yadav community and Muslims, while allegedly shielding others.
Speaking to reporters, Virendra highlighted the rising crime rates across Bihar. ‘Crime is surging, and the government is failing miserably to control it,’ he said. He emphasized that criminals exist in every community, yet the administration fixates on one group. ‘Yadavs and Muslims are being singled out, while non-Yadav offenders get protection,’ he alleged.
The MLA was quick to clarify his stance: ‘We do not support any criminal. Action must be impartial, targeting offenders regardless of caste or religion.’ His remarks come amid recent police encounters that have drawn sharp political divides.
On the same day, a dramatic showdown unfolded in Patna’s Alamganj police station area. Acting on a tip-off about a gang demanding extortion near Gayghat, police and the Special Task Force (STF) cordoned off the location early morning. The criminals opened fire upon spotting the forces, prompting retaliatory shots. Notorious gangster Rajiv Kumar alias Surya Don took a bullet in the leg and was arrested on the spot.
The injured suspect was rushed to a local hospital for treatment. Police confirmed the operation was based on credible intelligence about ransom demands.
JD(U) spokesperson Neeraj Kumar hit back at the allegations. ‘Criminals have no caste or religion—they are simply criminals,’ he asserted. ‘Police act in self-defense when fired upon. Where does caste factor in?’
This incident underscores the ongoing tension between Bihar’s ruling coalition and opposition over policing tactics. As crime debates rage, calls for uniform enforcement grow louder, with Virendra urging the government to address systemic failures rather than playing favorites.
