Lucknow erupted in controversy after a shocking Facebook post targeted Bahujan Samaj Party supremo and former Chief Minister Mayawati with derogatory remarks. An FIR has been registered against a profile named Shreya Yadav, following a complaint by Cantt Assembly Speaker Gangaram Verma.
The incident unfolded during a BSP meeting on February 9 at Damodar Nagar in Alam Bagh, under Krishna Nagar police station limits. Hosted at the residence of Cantt Assembly in-charge Devesh Kumar Gautam, the gathering turned tense when Verma scrolled through Facebook around 4 PM and stumbled upon the offensive post.
Verma described the language as deeply insulting and unacceptable in civilized society. ‘The post wounded the sentiments of all present, including myself,’ he stated in his complaint. He immediately demanded police action, attaching a screenshot of the post to his report.
Krishna Nagar police station in-charge acted swiftly, registering the case on February 10 under relevant sections. Investigators are now probing the authenticity of the Facebook ID and the circumstances surrounding the post. ‘We will trace the real owner and take strict measures,’ a senior officer confirmed.
This development underscores the growing tensions around social media misuse in political circles. BSP leaders have long flagged online trolls targeting their iconic leader, who has been a pivotal figure in Uttar Pradesh politics for decades. As the probe deepens, it could set precedents for handling digital defamation against public figures.
The party vows to pursue justice rigorously, emphasizing that such attacks will not deter their mission. Political analysts watch closely, noting how cyber laws are evolving to combat hate speech in India’s vibrant democracy.
