New Delhi marked a significant milestone in its BRICS journey as it hosted the inaugural meeting of BRICS Sherpas and Sous-Sherpas under its 2026 presidency. Held over two days on February 9-10, 2026, the gathering set the stage for a year of robust multilateral engagement.
Chaired by India’s BRICS Sherpa and Economic Relations Secretary Sudhakar Dalela, with support from Joint Secretary (Multilateral Economic Relations) Shambhu L. Hakki, the meeting brought together senior officials from Brazil, China, Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, and the UAE. The delegates focused on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s people-centric and humanity-first vision, outlining priorities for upcoming summits.
External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar launched the BRICS 2026 theme, logo, and website, emphasizing ‘Building Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation for Sustainable Development.’ Discussions delved into key areas like health, agriculture, disaster risk reduction, environment, climate change, energy, ICT, security, and counter-terrorism.
Representatives from various Indian ministries presented proposals on institutional development, economic and political cooperation among emerging economies, youth connectivity, cultural exchanges, sports collaboration, and forums such as the BRICS Academic Forum, Think Tank Council, Civil Forum, Business Council, and Women’s Business Alliance.
The event wasn’t all talks; delegates toured the National Handloom Museum, Crafts Academy, and Akshardham Temple, fostering cultural bonds. As BRICS Sherpas—akin to mountain guides leading leaders through complex global terrains—continue regular meetings, India’s presidency promises to strengthen global south solidarity.
India assumed the 18th BRICS presidency on January 13, 2026, positioning itself to drive inclusive growth and multilateral reforms amid a shifting world order.
