New Delhi is witnessing a sharp rise in lung cancer cases, following closely behind diabetes and thyroid disorders that already affect millions. Health authorities are sounding the alarm as even a persistent mild cough might be an early harbinger of this deadly disease.

According to recent data, India could see over 81,000 new cases in men and 30,000 in women by 2025. The AYUSH Ministry has taken a proactive stance, launching awareness campaigns to educate the public on spotting subtle symptoms that often mimic common respiratory issues.

In a recent social media post, the ministry highlighted how symptoms like ongoing cough, unexplained fatigue, shortness of breath, chest pain, and sudden weight loss can be overlooked. These signs are frequently dismissed as minor ailments, leading to delayed diagnosis and poorer outcomes.

Lung cancer isn’t just linked to smoking. Secondhand smoke, air pollution, occupational exposure to chemicals and asbestos all contribute significantly to the risk. Early detection through timely medical consultation can dramatically improve survival rates.

At its core, lung cancer arises when normal lung cells mutate and grow uncontrollably, forming tumors that impair breathing and spread. There are two primary types: non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), which is more common in India and often treatable if caught early, and small cell lung cancer (SCLC), notorious for its rapid metastasis.

Public health experts urge regular check-ups, especially for those in high-risk groups. Quitting tobacco, reducing exposure to pollutants, and maintaining a healthy lifestyle are key preventive measures. The ministry’s message is clear: don’t ignore that nagging cough—get it checked today.
