In a stern move, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued a show-cause notice to the Tamil Nadu government following the brutal attack on a migrant worker from Odisha. The incident, which unfolded near Tiruttani railway station in late December 2025, has exposed glaring lapses in police response and victim care.
K. Suraj, a 20-year-old laborer from Odisha, was viciously assaulted with a sharp sickle by four intoxicated 17-year-olds. Left critically injured, he was rushed to a hospital where his statement was recorded on December 27. Shockingly, the FIR was only filed the next day, reportedly under pressure from social media outrage.
What makes this case even more alarming is Suraj’s mysterious disappearance from the hospital while still under treatment. The state government’s response to the NHRC—that they have no information on his whereabouts—has drawn sharp criticism from commission member Priyank Kanoongo.
Labeling it as the ‘height of governmental negligence,’ Kanoongo highlighted the failure to locate the victim or contact his family. The NHRC has demanded a detailed report on actions against errant officials, arrangements for Suraj’s medical care, and reasons for not providing Rs 2 lakh compensation.
This isn’t just a crime story; it’s a stark violation of human rights, particularly for vulnerable migrant workers. The commission has warned of stricter measures if the state doesn’t comply promptly, underscoring the urgent need for better protection mechanisms across India.
