Chennai is buzzing with election preparations as the deadline for voter list revisions in Tamil Nadu draws to a close today. The Election Commission of India (ECI) is wrapping up its Special Intensive Revision (SIR) drive, ensuring every eligible citizen is accurately registered before the final list drops on February 17.
Starting from the draft publication on December 19, booth-level officers fanned out across the state for door-to-door verifications. This massive exercise saw citizens flooding online portals and special camps with claims, objections, and corrections until January 30. The response was overwhelming, with nearly 34 lakh applications pouring in for name changes, additions, deletions, and updates to personal details like addresses and photos.
Among these, around 12 lakh voters received notices for lacking proper documentation. Authorities have ramped up ground-level checks and document collections to resolve all cases before tonight’s cutoff. ‘Our teams are working round-the-clock to verify eligibility and ensure only genuine voters make the cut,’ an official stated.
The finalized list is expected to feature approximately 5.65 crore registered voters, forming the backbone for all upcoming elections in the state. This revision is crucial ahead of potential polls, promising a cleaner, more reliable electoral roll.
Residents are urged to check their details post-publication on February 17 and report discrepancies immediately. With this process concluding, Tamil Nadu gears up for a transparent voting future.
