New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended warm congratulations to his Japanese counterpart Sanae Takaiichi on Sunday for her landmark victory in the recent elections. In a message posted on X, PM Modi expressed confidence that under her leadership, the India-Japan friendship would reach new heights.
‘Congratulations @SanaeTakaichi on your historic win in the House of Representatives elections! Our Special Strategic and Global Partnership plays a crucial role in promoting global peace, stability, and prosperity. I am confident that under your able leadership, we will continue to take the India-Japan friendship to new heights,’ PM Modi wrote.
This gesture underscores the deepening ties between the two nations. Recall that during the G20 Summit in Johannesburg last November 23, PM Modi held a bilateral meeting with Takaiichi. The discussions focused on accelerating cooperation in innovation, defense, and talent mobility.
Post-meeting, PM Modi shared on X: ‘Had a meaningful meeting with PM of Japan @SanaeTakaichi. We discussed ways to accelerate our bilateral cooperation in innovation, defence, talent mobility and other areas. We are also working to strengthen trade ties between our countries. India-Japan strong partnership is vital for a better planet.’
Japanese exit polls painted a resounding picture of success for Takaiichi’s Liberal Democratic Party (LDP). Leading as Japan’s first female Prime Minister, the LDP was poised for a comfortable majority on its own, potentially securing two-thirds with allies.
Surveys projected the LDP, alongside its coalition partner Komeito (referred to as Japan Innovation Party in some reports), could clinch up to 366 seats in the House of Representatives.
Takaiichi’s bold move to dissolve the Lower House on January 23 marked a historic first in 60 years, triggering snap elections right at the start of a regular parliamentary session. This victory not only solidifies her position but also signals strong public support for her vision.
As India and Japan navigate global challenges, this electoral triumph opens fresh avenues for collaboration. Experts see it as a boost for Indo-Pacific strategies, economic partnerships, and technological exchanges. PM Modi’s prompt congratulations highlight the personal rapport between the leaders, setting the stage for enhanced bilateral engagements in the coming months.
