Colombo, February 7 – Australia’s explosive middle-order batter Tim David has hinted at a cautious approach to the T20 World Cup 2026, potentially sitting out the initial group stage matches. The team management is prioritizing his full fitness for the knockout phases, given his recent hamstring troubles.

David’s Big Bash League stint was cut short by the injury, followed by his absence from the Pakistan tour. After thorough rehabilitation, he has been cleared to feature in the World Cup, but with managed minutes early on.

Australia kicks off their Group B campaign against Ireland at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. Speaking to cricket.com.au post-practice, David expressed confidence in his recovery. ‘I felt strong and wanted to bat longer, but they told me to hold back a bit,’ he said. ‘Discussions are ongoing with the medical staff and management. I’m gearing up for the business end of the tournament.’

Positioned as a key finisher, David’s role demands responsibility against spin-heavy attacks prevalent in the tournament. He emphasized maintaining aggressive intent. In 58 T20 matches, the right-hander boasts 1,596 runs, including one century, nine half-centuries, 126 fours, and a whopping 101 sixes.

Australia’s schedule includes clashes with Ireland on February 11, Zimbabwe on the 13th, Sri Lanka on the 16th, and Oman on the 20th. Fans will watch closely if David’s patience pays off, propelling the defending champions deeper into the competition.
