Ahmedabad, February 7: The trailer of Taapsee Pannu’s upcoming Bollywood film ‘Assi’ has taken social media by storm, drawing attention to a pressing issue in India. Directed by the acclaimed Anubhav Sinha, known for his hard-hitting films like ‘Mulk’ and ‘Article 15’ that tackle societal evils head-on, ‘Assi’ promises to delve deep into the harrowing experiences of rape survivors.
During a promotional press conference in Ahmedabad, Sinha opened up to the media about the film’s title and its profound significance. ‘Every day, 80 women in our country fall victim to sexual assault,’ he explained, citing official reports. ‘These stories make headlines—sometimes on the front page, sometimes buried on page eight. People read, express sorrow, and move on. But what happens to the survivor afterward? How do they rebuild their lives? Does the perpetrator ever feel remorse?’
Sinha emphasized that ‘Assi’—named after the stark statistic of 80 daily cases—is a meticulously researched courtroom drama blending thriller and suspense elements. The narrative weaves real-life cases into a compelling story, highlighting how everyone involved twists facts to their advantage. ‘We explored multiple cases to craft this tale,’ he said, underscoring the film’s aim to humanize the aftermath of such tragedies.
Looking ahead, the director revealed he’s juggling four scripts, with two nearly finalized, despite his packed promotion schedule across 40-42 cities. A self-proclaimed foodie, Sinha shared his tradition of savoring local cuisines, eagerly anticipating a Gujarati thali in Ahmedabad.
‘Assi’ marks another bold chapter in Sinha’s career, challenging viewers to confront uncomfortable truths about justice and empathy in modern India. As promotions heat up, the film is poised to spark nationwide conversations on women’s safety.
