In a decisive crackdown on illegal liquor trade, the Excise Department in Dhanbad launched a major raid early Friday morning in Palani village under Baliapur police station limits. Acting on credible intelligence, a team of excise officials, backed by local police, stormed the residence of Shivcharan Mahto, where counterfeit foreign liquor was reportedly being stored and sold.

The operation, directed by Assistant Excise Commissioner, kicked off around 6 AM. Despite attempts by suspects to dispose of evidence upon sensing the raid, officers seized between 18 to 25 liters of fake English whiskey. The contraband, valued at an estimated Rs 20,000 to 25,000, posed a severe health risk to unsuspecting consumers.

Excise Officer Joy Hembram confirmed the arrest of one individual at the scene, who is currently under interrogation. ‘This nexus not only evades government revenue but endangers public health,’ Hembram stated, emphasizing the department’s ongoing campaign against spurious liquor. Further probes aim to unravel the supply chain and nab accomplices.

Dhanbad has seen a surge in such illicit operations, prompting intensified surveillance. The raid underscores the Excise Department’s commitment to curbing this menace through relentless raids and strict enforcement. Officials warn that more actions are imminent, targeting kingpins in the underground booze racket.

Local residents welcomed the move, highlighting frequent complaints about bootlegging in rural pockets. With festivals approaching, authorities are ramping up vigilance to prevent spikes in fake liquor circulation. This bust serves as a stern message to those flouting liquor laws, promising zero tolerance.
