BHUBANESWAR: Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has enthusiastically welcomed the impending India-US trade agreement, hailing it as a game-changer for the state’s economy. Speaking on Thursday, Majhi highlighted how the deal would supercharge exports of handloom products, seafood, and rare earth minerals, injecting fresh momentum into Odisha’s growth story.

In a detailed post on his official Facebook page, the Chief Minister delved into the vast potential of Odisha’s handloom sector. ‘Whether it’s our traditional handloom weaves or modern ready-made garments, this trade pact will propel Odisha’s craftsmanship onto global shelves,’ he declared. Lower tariffs will streamline exports, creating a surge of job opportunities for local weavers and artisans. Odisha’s iconic traditional attire is poised to set new trends worldwide, blending heritage with international appeal.

Majhi also pointed to the technological synergies between India and the US, positioning Odisha as a key player in the global semiconductor supply chain. With abundant rare earth minerals, the state is set to evolve into a hub for advanced tech skills. ‘This agreement bridges our mineral wealth with cutting-edge global technology,’ he emphasized, underscoring the transformative impact on industrial development.

The coastal communities stand to gain immensely too. Reduced tariffs will fling open the doors of the American market to Odisha’s seafood exports, empowering fishermen and farmers in coastal districts. Majhi envisioned Odisha emerging as a frontrunner in the ‘blue economy,’ with soaring demand for shrimp, fish, and other marine delicacies driving income growth and economic vitality.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar confirmed earlier that day that the historic deal is in its final stages, promising swift finalization. For Odisha, this pact isn’t just trade—it’s a launchpad for sustainable prosperity, weaving local strengths into the fabric of global commerce.
