New Delhi buzzes with anticipation as the T20 World Cup 2026 kicks off on February 7, but India’s chief selector isn’t rushing to replace all-rounder Washington Sundar. The star player, currently rehabilitating at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence (COE), suffered a rib injury during the first ODI against New Zealand in Vadodara on January 11. Remarkably, he batted unbeaten for 7 runs, steering India to a thrilling 4-wicket victory despite the pain.

According to reports, the selection committee is holding off on any squad changes, eagerly awaiting detailed recovery updates from the COE. As of Thursday, Sundar remains firmly in the team’s World Cup plans, with selectors optimistic about his fitness. The final call rests with COE trainers and physiotherapists, who expect him to be tournament-ready.

Captain Suryakumar Yadav fueled hopes post the T20I series win against New Zealand, revealing Sundar has resumed batting and bowling practice. ‘He’s progressing well and should join us soon,’ Suryakumar said confidently.

India warmed up impressively, thrashing South Africa by 30 runs after posting 240/6 on Wednesday. Next up is Namibia on February 6, before the campaign opener against USA at Wankhede Stadium. Sundar’s versatility could be pivotal in India’s title defense—will he make it back in time?

The cricket fraternity watches closely as BCCI’s medical team provides crucial insights. For now, faith in Sundar’s recovery keeps the squad unchanged, blending caution with optimism in this high-stakes tournament.
