Star wrestler Vinesh Phogat has unleashed a scathing attack on the Haryana Wrestling Association’s selection process for the Federation Cup 2026. In a bold social media post, she labeled the criteria as deeply unfair, arguing they sideline hardworking athletes who have dedicated years to the sport.
Phogat questioned why trials are limited exclusively to medalists from the 2025 Senior State Championships and those competing internationally in 2025. ‘What about the 2024 National medal winners? Have they suddenly become ineligible?’ she asked pointedly. She highlighted the plight of athletes barred due to age restrictions from the 2025 Senior Nationals, insisting they remain fully eligible for 2026 events.
With major tournaments like the Asian Games and World Championships on the horizon this year, Phogat emphasized the dreams of athletes aiming to win medals for India. ‘These rules are not just robbing them of opportunities; they’re slamming the door on their futures,’ she wrote. She accused the association of unfair state-level trials, demanding open trials where talent can shine on the mat.
‘Fair selection means open trials. Talent is recognized on the mat, not through arbitrary exclusions,’ Phogat asserted. Her appeal extended to Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, urging intervention to deliver justice for the state’s wrestlers. This controversy underscores growing tensions in Indian wrestling governance, where past medalists feel increasingly marginalized.
