New Delhi is witnessing a strong response from the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) against the rising tide of sexual exploitation in gyms and fitness centers across India. Member Priyank Kanungo has voiced deep concern over trainers targeting women, girls, and teenagers, calling it a grave social, moral, and legal crisis.

Kanungo highlighted not just the harassment but also health risks from unregulated supplements and extreme workouts. In a bold move, the NHRC has issued notices to all state governments, the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, and sports authorities, demanding details on rules governing gym operations.

On social media platform X, Kanungo posted, detailing multiple incidents and urging stricter oversight. This action follows earlier probes, like the Mirzapur case in Uttar Pradesh where a gym was allegedly used for exploiting young women and forced conversions.

The commission views these as blatant human rights violations. Authorities have been asked to submit comprehensive reports. Kanungo emphasized the need for robust guidelines to curb unethical practices and protect vulnerable gym-goers.

Fitness enthusiasts, especially women, have long raised alarms about predatory behavior in such spaces. Reports from cities like Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru paint a disturbing picture of unchecked misconduct. Health experts echo concerns over substandard supplements posing life-threatening dangers.

NHRC’s intervention signals a potential overhaul in the fitness industry regulation. Gym owners now face scrutiny over trainer credentials, safety protocols, and customer protection measures. This could lead to nationwide audits and stricter licensing.

As public outrage grows, the onus is on governments to act swiftly. Ensuring safe workout environments is crucial for promoting health without compromising dignity and safety. The NHRC’s proactive stance offers hope for systemic change.
