In the heart of Bihar’s Munger district lies Sita Kund, a sacred site revered across India for its deep ties to the Ramayana. Known also as Ram Tirath, this temple complex blends unwavering faith with an enduring mystery. Legend holds that it was here Mother Sita underwent her fiery Agni Pariksha to prove her purity after her rescue from Ravana. In the aftermath, the earth is said to have opened, revealing a hot spring whose waters remain scalding to this day.

Located just 8 kilometers east of Munger’s district headquarters in Naubagari North Panchayat, Sita Kund stands out for its perpetually warm waters. No matter the biting winter chill, the temperature never dips. Surrounding the main Sita Kund are four additional pools named after Lord Ram, Lakshman, Bharat, and Shatrughna. Curiously, these stay at normal or cool temperatures, adding to the site’s enigma.

Every year, devotees flock from across the nation to bathe in the sacred waters, seeking blessings and purification. The real spectacle unfolds during the month of Magha, when the grand Sita Kund Mela kicks off. In 2026, it began on February 1 and runs for a full month, marking the first time it’s received official state fair status. Thousands immerse themselves, perform rituals, and celebrate the divine legacy of Ram and Sita.

The hot spring’s secret continues to baffle scientists and researchers. Despite numerous studies, no one has pinpointed why the water stays hot year-round. The kund measures about 20 feet in length and width, plunging 12 feet deep. Historians and geologists periodically visit, yet the phenomenon defies explanation, preserving Sita Kund’s aura of the miraculous. As pilgrims gather, the site reaffirms its place as a beacon of devotion and wonder in Bihar’s spiritual landscape.
