In a landmark move to boost higher education access, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar announced on Wednesday that degree colleges will be established in every block of the state. This ambitious initiative, part of the ‘Saat Nishchay-3’ program under the fourth resolution ‘Advanced Education-Bright Future,’ aims to ensure no student, especially girls, is left behind in pursuing undergraduate studies.

Currently, out of Bihar’s 534 blocks, 213 lack any recognized or affiliated degree college. Addressing this gap head-on, the government has decided to set up colleges in all these underserved areas, with classes slated to commence by July 2026. ‘This will revolutionize access to quality education in rural Bihar,’ CM Kumar emphasized during the announcement in Patna.

Complementing this expansion, 55 prestigious existing institutions will be upgraded to Centers of Excellence. Plans are underway to enhance infrastructure, faculty development, and curriculum to make them hubs of excellence. Consultations with veteran teachers and alumni are already in progress to incorporate valuable insights.

The timing of this announcement couldn’t be better, coming right after the state budget for 2026-27 was presented in the assembly, which allocates substantial funds to education. CM Kumar highlighted how these colleges will empower girls, provide job-oriented training, and contribute to Bihar’s all-round development. ‘Education is the key to empowerment and progress,’ he asserted, painting a vision of a more literate and skilled youth.

This step is expected to reduce migration for higher studies, keep talent within the state, and foster economic growth through a better-educated workforce. As Bihar marches towards educational equity, this policy could serve as a model for other states grappling with similar challenges.
