In a shocking revelation from Jharkhand’s Chaibasa Sadar Hospital, the High Court has cracked down hard on medical negligence that left five thalassemia children battling HIV. Justice Gautam Kumar Choudhary’s bench, hearing a writ petition by Deepak Hembrom, mandated immediate FIR registration against the culprits.
The court labeled this as gross negligence and systemic failure in the hospital’s blood bank. Thalassemia patients, aged 5 to 7 from impoverished families, received contaminated blood transfusions in 2025, turning their lives into a nightmare of health crises, stigma, and financial ruin.
Authorities were directed to act swiftly: the petitioner must file at the local station, and the SHO must register the FIR without delay. A copy must be submitted to the court alongside counter-affidavits. The petition also sought an SIT probe under judicial oversight.
While the state announced Rs 2 lakh compensation per child, petitioners decry it as woefully inadequate for lifelong HIV treatment costs. This case spotlights glaring lapses in blood screening protocols, demanding accountability and reforms to prevent future tragedies.
As investigations unfold, the focus remains on justice for these vulnerable kids and overhauling Jharkhand’s public health infrastructure to ensure no more lives are endangered by unchecked medical errors.
