In a significant step towards deepening bilateral economic cooperation, India’s Secretary (West) in the Ministry of External Affairs, Sibi George, held productive talks in Oslo with Norway’s State Secretary for Trade and Industry, Ragnhild Schonander Sirsatd. The meeting, which took place on Monday, focused on strengthening economic relations post the implementation of the India-EFTA-TEPA agreement and ramping up investments in green and blue technology sectors.
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal highlighted the discussions on social media platform X, noting the positive dialogue on enhancing India-Norway economic ties. Green tech refers to innovative solutions designed to minimize environmental impact through sustainable practices, while blue tech encompasses technologies aimed at improving ocean health, protecting marine ecosystems, and bolstering the blue economy.
This comes on the heels of a landmark India-EU Free Trade Agreement (FTA) signed on January 27 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen during the 16th India-EU Summit in New Delhi. The FTA will eliminate or reduce tariffs on over 90% of EU exports to India, including steep cuts on machinery (up to 44%), chemicals (22%), and pharmaceuticals (11%). Tariffs on EU beer will drop to 50%, with most chemicals, aircraft, and spacecraft duties phased out entirely.
During his visit, Sibi George also engaged with the vibrant Indian community in Norway, praising their role as a vital bridge between the two nations. He briefed them on India’s leadership in the Global South, its growing global stature, and the implications of the India-EFTA and EU-FTA deals.
The Indian Embassy in Norway shared on X that George emphasized the diaspora’s importance in India’s growth and global engagement. George’s trip included the 12th Foreign Office Consultation with Norway’s Foreign Ministry Secretary General Torjer Larsen, aimed at bolstering cooperation in key areas.
India-Norway relations, established in February 1947, have remained cordial, rooted in shared values of democracy, human rights, and rule of law. This visit underscores both nations’ commitment to expanding partnerships in sustainable technologies and trade.
