Sydney’s cricket circles are buzzing with concern as Australia faces a major setback ahead of the T20 World Cup 2026. Star pacer Josh Hazlewood is likely to miss the tournament’s initial stages due to ongoing rehabilitation for an Achilles injury in Sydney. In a swift move, selectors have brought in Sean Abbott as the traveling reserve to bolster the fast bowling options.

Hazlewood’s woes began with a hamstring strain that ruled him out of the England series. During recovery, an Achilles issue cropped up, prompting medical staff and selectors to keep him at home for now. No firm timeline has been set for his arrival in Sri Lanka, prioritizing his long-term fitness.

Australian selector Tony Dodemaide emphasized the decision’s prudence. ‘It’s more practical for Josh to continue rehab in a familiar environment before heading overseas,’ he noted. With Nathan Ellis returning to the squad, Abbott’s inclusion provides crucial cover. The all-rounder brings valuable experience from multiple World Cup campaigns and recent Pakistan tours.

This comes amid a wave of fitness challenges for the defending champions. Pat Cummins is already sidelined with a back injury, paving the way for Ben Dwarshuis in the 15-man squad. Matt Renshaw replaced Matthew Short, while Nathan Ellis missed BBL finals due to hamstring troubles. Tim David hasn’t played since late December after a similar injury, and Glenn Maxwell was rested post his ankle recovery during the Pakistan tour.

Adam Zampa bowled just two overs in Lahore due to groin discomfort, though it was precautionary. Maxwell, Ellis, and David are expected to link up in Colombo soon. Australia kicks off against Ireland on February 11, with captain Mitchell Marsh leading a squad aiming to defend their title despite the hurdles.

The full squad includes Mitchell Marsh (c), Xavier Bartlett, Cooper Connolly, Tim David, Ben Dwarshuis, Cameron Green, Nathan Ellis, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Matt Kuhnemann, Glenn Maxwell, Matt Renshaw, Marcus Stoinis, Adam Zampa. Traveling reserve: Sean Abbott.
