New Delhi witnessed a landmark initiative on Sunday as Delhi Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta inaugurated the annual health checkup program for current MLAs at Sant Parmanand Hospital. Emphasizing the vital link between healthy representatives and robust institutions, Gupta declared, ‘Healthy public representatives form the foundation of strong institutions and ensure better public service.’

The program, running from February 2 to February 14, 2026, falls under the Delhi government’s ongoing health scheme for the national capital region. Speaking at the event, Gupta highlighted how this effort emerged from consensus among all assembly members, marking a fresh start in prioritizing lawmakers’ well-being.

On the opening day, MLAs Surya Prakash Khatri, Poonam Bhardwaj, and Anil Jha underwent their checkups. Daily, six legislators will participate, ensuring comprehensive coverage over the two-week period. Gupta stressed the necessity of regular health screenings for MLAs, who remain constantly engaged with the public.

‘Effective public service is only possible when representatives are physically fit, mentally sharp, and emotionally positive,’ he noted. Particularly for those over 40, preventive healthcare becomes crucial, he added, urging sustained vigilance.

Gupta described the initiative as a unique awareness campaign, recently showcased by Deputy Speaker Mohan Singh Bisht at the All India Assembly Speakers’ Conference in Lucknow. Several state speakers expressed keen interest in the Delhi model, seeking detailed insights.

Confident that this program will inspire other state assemblies, Gupta appealed to fellow speakers to launch similar drives. ‘This will empower elected representatives to serve with greater energy, capability, and effectiveness,’ he concluded, setting a national benchmark for legislator health.
