Mumbai’s political landscape shifted dramatically on Friday as Sunetra Pawar, widow of the late Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, was unanimously elected as the leader of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) legislature party. In a swift move to stabilize the party amid grief, she is set to take oath as the new Deputy Chief Minister at 5 PM at the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly.

The decision came during a crucial party meeting where senior NCP leader Dilip Walse Patil proposed Sunetra’s name, receiving strong backing from heavyweights like Chhagan Bhujbal. This transition follows the untimely demise of Ajit Pawar, leaving a void that party leaders believe only Sunetra can fill effectively.

Sources indicate the oath-taking ceremony will be a low-key affair, with Governor expected to arrive in Mumbai around 4 PM to administer the oath. Raj Bhavan has been duly informed, underscoring the urgency and consensus within the party ranks.

NCP leader Anil Bheedas Patil emphasized the emotional challenge, noting, ‘Convincing Sunetra was the hardest part after such a devastating loss. Yet, with local body elections looming, her leadership is crucial to guide candidates Ajit was tirelessly campaigning for.’

Legislator Sana Malik echoed this sentiment, highlighting Sunetra’s two-year immersion with party workers, making her the natural successor. ‘If anyone could step in seamlessly after Ajit, it’s Sunetra,’ she affirmed.

Amid speculations of a potential merger with Sharad Pawar’s faction, Patil clarified that discussions were underway but details remain elusive post-Ajit’s passing. Malik added caution, stating no merger seems feasible until national presidents are elected for both parties.

As Sunetra prepares to helm the party, her oath marks not just a personal milestone but a pivotal moment for NCP’s future in Maharashtra politics, ensuring continuity in the face of adversity.
