Wellington’s pace sensation Ben Sears has been added to New Zealand’s squad as a reserve player for the upcoming T20 World Cup starting February 7 in India and Sri Lanka. The Black Caps announced the move on Friday, with Sears set to join the team in Mumbai this Sunday.
Sears steps in for Kyle Jamieson, who was recently called up after Adam Milne’s hamstring injury sidelined him. Milne picked up the knock while bowling in the SA20 tournament, and scans confirmed the severity, ruling him out.
Currently in top form for Wellington in the domestic Super Smash, Sears has shown remarkable recovery from his own hamstring troubles that kept him out earlier in the home summer. Head coach Rob Walter praised the 23-year-old’s hard work.
“Ben has worked incredibly hard to get back on the park, and it’s been great to see him playing and performing well,” Walter said. “He played the full Super Smash campaign with the Firebirds, taking 15 wickets in nine matches to become the joint-second highest wicket-taker in the round-robin stage.”
Walter added that Sears’ presence in India will provide crucial cover should any injuries occur during the tournament. New Zealand finds itself in Group D alongside Afghanistan, Canada, South Africa, and UAE. Their campaign kicks off on February 8 against Afghanistan in Chennai.
The full New Zealand squad includes captain Mitchell Santner, Finn Allen, Michael Bracewell, Mark Chapman, Devon Conway, Jacob Duffy, Lockie Ferguson, Matt Henry, Kyle Jamieson, Daryl Mitchell, James Neesham, Glenn Phillips, Rachin Ravindra, Tim Seifert, and Ish Sodhi. Ben Sears serves as the reserve player.
This strategic addition bolsters New Zealand’s bowling depth, ensuring they’re prepared for the challenges of the global showpiece. Fans will be watching closely as the Kiwis aim to make a strong impression in the subcontinent.
