New Delhi’s diplomatic landscape just got brighter with Sweden’s Ambassador to India, Jan Thesleff, showering praise on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership. In an exclusive interview, Thesleff highlighted how India’s assertive presence on international stages like the G20 and upcoming AI summits serves not just the nation but the entire world.
The landmark free trade agreement (FTA) between India and the European Union has been hailed as a game-changer amid escalating global tariff wars. Thesleff emphasized that this pact demonstrates the power of collaboration in uncertain times. ‘India and the EU are showing the world that we can come together, agree on rules-based order, and establish reliable tariffs,’ he stated, underscoring India’s role as a trusted partner.
On India’s bid for a permanent seat at the UN Security Council, the ambassador voiced Sweden’s support for UN reforms. ‘India deserves its rightful place in a reformed, united Security Council,’ he affirmed, reflecting a growing international consensus.
Discussing global supply chains, Thesleff pointed to India’s strategic importance in diversifying away from over-reliance. With over 400 Swedish companies manufacturing in India, the FTA secures vital supply routes. ‘This flexibility is crucial in our interconnected world,’ he noted.
Thesleff also celebrated India’s vast talent pool, particularly its innovative youth. Swedish institutions are eager to attract Indian postgraduates and PhD candidates, especially in green transitions and connectivity sectors. ‘India’s graduates are already world-class; we’re here to build on that foundation,’ he added.
As India hosts key global events, Thesleff’s words reinforce the narrative of a rising power contributing to global stability and progress. This FTA and India’s global engagements signal a new era of dependable partnerships.
