Lucknow is buzzing with excitement as Uttar Pradesh forges a dynamic new partnership with Japan’s Yamanashi Prefecture, set to revolutionize tourism ties. In a high-level meeting chaired by Tourism and Culture Minister Jaiveer Singh, officials from both sides delved deep into collaborative opportunities spanning wellness retreats, golf adventures, culinary exchanges, Buddhist heritage tours, literary journeys, and knowledge-based explorations.
The discussions highlighted the profound cultural and spiritual bonds between India and Japan. Minister Singh emphasized that Uttar Pradesh’s unparalleled Buddhist legacy—home to key sites like Sarnath, Kushinagar, and Kapilvastu linked to Lord Buddha’s life—positions the state as a global draw for spiritual seekers. ‘Tourism and culture can provide a lasting foundation for our economic partnership,’ he asserted, underscoring the timeless appeal of shared heritage.
Adding momentum, plans are underway for a grand ‘UP Festival’ in Japan by April or May 2025. This event promises to showcase Uttar Pradesh’s rich traditions, vibrant culture, and tourism potential to Japanese audiences, fostering greater people-to-people connections.
Additional Chief Secretary Amrit Abhijat of the Tourism, Culture, and Charitable Endowments Department drew parallels between Japanese philosophies like Ikigai, Wabi-Sabi, Zen, and Jajen with ancient Indian wisdom. He spotlighted wellness tourism synergies and the state’s premium golf courses in Agra, Lucknow, and Varanasi as gateways for sports enthusiasts. ‘Modern tourism goes beyond hotels—it’s about curated experiences, food trails, literary dialogues, and immersive learning,’ Abhijat noted, urging tour operators to craft bespoke packages for Japanese visitors.
Yamanashi Deputy Governor Junichi Ishidera affirmed the strengthening dialogue since their December 2024 MoU. Positioning Yamanashi as UP’s gateway in Japan, he announced a 200-member Japanese delegation’s visit in August 2025 to boost trade, tourism, and cultural exchanges. This partnership signals a new era of mutual prosperity, blending Eastern traditions with innovative travel trends.
