To address this, the Constituent Assembly formed on December 9, 1946, embarking on the monumental task of drafting a foundational document. Three years later, on January 26, 1950, the Constitution took effect, embedding grand ideals into the fabric of the republic.
The date was no accident. January 26 echoed the 1930 declaration of Purna Swaraj, when Indians first celebrated full independence nationwide, rejecting colonial status. This choice linked the freedom struggle’s fervor to a structured democratic republic.
The journey began in 1929 with demands for complete sovereignty evolving into a national goal. By 1930, mass observances solidified this resolve. The Constituent Assembly’s inaugural session in Parliament House launched the drafting process under Dr. Rajendra Prasad as president and Dr. B.R. Ambedkar as Drafting Committee chairman.
Leaders like Gandhi and Nehru insisted on Ambedkar’s role to ensure the Constitution’s legitimacy across divides. His appointment guaranteed no one could challenge the process as exclusionary.
Over two years, 11 months, and 17 days, intense debates shaped the document. The Assembly held 11 sessions over 165 days, deliberating the draft for 114 days. Adopted on November 26, 1949, it replaced the Government of India Act 1935, empowering democratic institutions.
January 26, 1950, birthed a sovereign democratic republic. The 42nd Amendment in 1976 added ‘socialist’ and ‘secular,’ refining its identity.
