In a thrilling finale to the Big Bash League season, Perth Scorchers scripted history by clinching their record sixth title, overpowering Sydney Sixers by six wickets in Perth on January 25. This victory marks another chapter in the Scorchers’ dominant legacy, having previously triumphed in the 2013/14, 2014/15, 2016/17, 2021/22, and 2022/23 seasons.
Sydney Sixers, sent in to bat after losing the toss, struggled from the outset and were bundled out for a modest 132 in their 20 overs. The innings began with an early setback as Daniel Hughes departed for just 7 runs. Josh Philippe and Steve Smith then tried to steady the ship with a 27-run stand for the second wicket, but Smith fell for 24 off 13 balls.
Philippe, alongside captain Moises Henriques, added 32 runs for the third wicket, both scoring 24 each before perishing. The Scorchers’ bowlers were relentless, with Jhye Richardson and David Payne claiming three wickets apiece, Mahli Beardman taking two, and Aaron Hardie one. This clinical bowling performance set up a chase that seemed well within reach.
Chasing 133, Perth Scorchers got off to a flying start thanks to the explosive opening pair of Mitchell Marsh and Finn Allen, who rattled up 80 runs in just 50 balls. Allen smashed 36 off 22 deliveries, including four boundaries and a six, before departing. Hardie followed soon after for 5.
Marsh anchored the innings superbly, scoring 44 off 43 balls with four fours and two sixes, partnering with Josh Inglis for 33 runs in a crucial third-wicket stand. Inglis remained not out on 29, guiding the team home in 17.3 overs. Sydney’s Sean Abbott picked up two wickets, while Mitchell Starc and Jack Edwards took one each.
This triumph not only cements Perth’s status as the most successful BBL franchise but also showcases their depth and resilience. Fans erupted in joy as the Scorchers lifted the trophy, setting the stage for celebrations across Western Australia.
