Mumbai’s ambitious Metro Line 7A project has notched a significant milestone with the successful diversion of a critical 2400mm diameter Upper Vaitarna water supply line. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) executed this complex engineering feat with precision, ensuring minimal disruption to the city’s water supply while paving the way for accelerated metro construction.
The Upper Vaitarna pipeline serves as a lifeline for Mumbai’s water needs, making its diversion a high-stakes operation. Positioned directly in the path of the Metro Line 7A corridor stretching from Dahisar to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, the pipeline had to be meticulously rerouted. MMRDA’s team completed the task within the stipulated timeframe, restoring normal water flow without major interruptions across the city. While some areas experienced temporary low pressure, the overall impact remained negligible.
This achievement was the result of seamless collaboration between MMRDA and multiple Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) departments, including the Planning Division, Outside City Trunk Mains, Hydraulic Engineer’s Office, and K/East Ward. The coordinated effort prevented any delays, underscoring the importance of inter-agency synergy in large-scale infrastructure projects.
Metro Line 7A promises to transform connectivity in Mumbai by alleviating chronic traffic congestion and providing swift access to the airport from areas like Dahisar, Poisar, Akurli, and Magathane. With this hurdle cleared, focus now shifts to tunneling, station development, and other key phases, bringing the project closer to operational reality.
