Mumbai’s music scene is buzzing as playback singer Sonu Nigam, with over 700 songs to his credit in Hindi cinema, has once again captured hearts with his soulful renditions in the much-awaited ‘Border 2’. The film features seven tracks, three of which bear Nigam’s emotive voice, reigniting nostalgia for the 1997 war classic.
In a heartfelt Instagram video, Nigam reflected on his journey with the franchise. ‘I feel incredibly fortunate,’ he shared, recalling his first brush with ‘Border’ at its 1997 premiere. ‘Never imagined this beautiful journey would span 29 years, leading me back for ‘Border 2′.’ He emphasized the film’s essence as more than entertainment—it’s a poignant tribute to patriotism, mirroring real battlefield valor with unflinching honesty.
Addressing lyricist Javed Akhtar’s recent comments criticizing the recreation of old songs, Nigam offered a balanced perspective. ‘Javed Saab is absolutely right that recreating classics isn’t ideal,’ he conceded. ‘But for ‘Border’, ‘Sandese Aate Hain’ is like the soldier’s uniform—integral and irreplaceable. You can’t envision the film without it.’
Nigam highlighted the team’s commitment to preserving the original iconic tracks while introducing fresh material. ‘We revere Javed Saab as our guru,’ he added. ‘Honoring his call for new songs, ‘Mitti Ke Bete’ emerges as a heartfelt gift to the nation and the film—a tear-jerking ode to families awaiting soldiers who never returned.’
As ‘Border 2’ gears up for release, Nigam’s words underscore the delicate balance between legacy and innovation in Bollywood music, ensuring the sequel honors its predecessor while carving its own path.
