In a shocking incident that has sent shockwaves through Greater Noida’s Knowledge Park-3 area, a second-year BTech student took a fatal leap from the fourth floor of his private hostel on the intervening night of January 23-24. Udit Soni, son of Vijay Soni from Bhognipur, Jhansi, was rushed to a nearby hospital with severe injuries but was declared dead by doctors upon arrival.
The tragic event unfolded after Udit returned to the hostel intoxicated alongside friends Chetan and Kuldeep. Hostel management, spotting the rule violation, reprimanded him and recorded a video of the incident, which was promptly sent to his father. Enraged upon receiving the clip, Vijay called Udit and harshly scolded him, even threatening to get his name struck off the college rolls and summon him home.
Overwhelmed by mental distress from the scolding and the hostel management’s actions, Udit, in a moment of deep anguish, jumped from the building. Chaos ensued as fellow residents and staff discovered him critically injured on the ground. Police arrived swiftly, took custody of the body, conducted a preliminary inquiry at the scene, and sent it for postmortem.
Authorities are interrogating witnesses, including Udit’s friends and hostel staff. Senior officials visited the site to assess the situation and console distressed students. A case will be registered based on the family’s complaint under relevant sections. This heartbreaking loss raises serious questions about student mental health support in educational hostels.
Udit’s family is devastated, grappling with unimaginable grief. The incident has sparked calls for better counseling services and stricter oversight of hostel regulations to prevent such devastating outcomes.
