Ukraine’s Ambassador to the US, Oksana Markarova, confirmed the meeting, signaling a potential breakthrough in bilateral relations amid ongoing geopolitical tensions.
Markarova shared on social media that the delegations aim to finalize agreements on robust security guarantees and pathways to Ukraine’s economic revival. These pacts could be signed as early as next week during the World Economic Forum in Davos, a gathering of global leaders that often sets the stage for major diplomatic deals.
Leading Ukraine’s team are heavyweights including Rustem Umerov, head of the National Security and Defense Council; Kyrylo Budanov, chief of the President’s Office; and David Arakhamia, leader of the ruling Servant of the People party in parliament. Their presence underscores the gravity of the discussions.
This follows last month’s preliminary talks, building momentum toward concrete outcomes. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized the urgency during a recent press conference, stressing Ukraine’s need for ironclad, long-term security assurances. He revealed that officials will soon dive deeper into security packages and reconstruction aid, with Davos looming as a pivotal signing venue.
Zelenskyy didn’t hold back on defense needs, calling for a steady stream of missiles to bolster air defenses. He noted that while some systems lacked ammunition until Friday morning, a fresh shipment arrived that day, offering temporary relief but highlighting persistent vulnerabilities.
Meanwhile, Moscow has thrown its weight behind Washington’s diplomatic push. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov welcomed US efforts to steer the Ukraine conflict toward a political resolution, aligning them with Russia’s interests. ‘Peace doesn’t happen by itself,’ Peskov remarked, urging collective action from all stakeholders.
