In a significant boost to Indo-German relations, Chancellor Friedrich Merz declared India a preferred partner during his two-day visit to the country. Speaking in Ahmedabad after discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Merz emphasized the need to elevate bilateral ties amid global geopolitical turbulence.
Merz arrived in Gujarat’s vibrant city, participating in the International Kite Festival before holding key talks. In a joint statement, he invoked Mahatma Gandhi’s philosophy: ‘Be the change you wish to see in the world.’ Addressing Modi directly, he said both nations are committed to forging stronger bonds.
‘Ahmedabad symbolizes modern India’s birthplace,’ Merz noted, highlighting Gujarat’s economic dynamism from textiles to smart industrial parks and startups. He praised the shared political values, economic potential, and skilled workforce that underpin their partnership.
Amid rising protectionism, Merz stressed focus on free trade and open markets. ‘India and Germany oppose weaponizing supply chains and raw materials by major powers,’ he asserted. Reducing one-sided dependencies will fortify both economies, he added.
Positioning India as G20’s fastest-growing economy and a key Indo-Pacific player, Merz called for expanded networks beyond Europe and transatlantic ties. ‘India is not just a necessary partner for Germany—it’s a preferred one,’ he affirmed.
Merz outlined three priorities: advocating an international order for freedom and security; navigating great power politics; and deepening defense and economic cooperation. Citing Russia’s invasion of Ukraine as a stark example of global upheaval, he underscored overlapping interests despite differences.
Defense collaboration includes joint naval and air exercises, port visits, and consultations. A new MoU will enhance innovation and global supply chains in defense industries, signaling India’s reduced reliance on Russia. Economic ties will accelerate alongside.
As Europe’s economic powerhouse and the world’s largest democracy, India and Germany share values, dynamism, and technical prowess. This visit sets the stage for a new era of strategic partnership.
