SAWAI MADHOPUR, Rajasthan – In a bold stand against what they call a ‘direct attack’ on rural livelihoods, Congress workers launched a high-stakes fast and dharna here today. The ‘Save MGNREGA Campaign’ drew hundreds, spotlighting fears that central government policies are dismantling the flagship rural employment scheme.
Leading the charge were AICC Secretary and Assembly Deputy Leader, who joined protesters on the streets, vowing not to eat until demands are met. ‘MGNREGA is the lifeline for millions of poor families. This government wants to starve them out,’ declared the senior leader amid chants and banners.
The demonstration comes amid reports of slashed budgets, delayed payments, and technical glitches crippling job cards across Rajasthan. Protesters allege the BJP-led Centre is deliberately weakening the 100-day wage program launched under UPA, forcing villagers back into debt traps.
Local farmers and laborers shared harrowing stories. One woman recounted walking 20 kilometers daily for work that never materializes. ‘Our children go hungry while ministers feast,’ she said, tears in her eyes.
Congress demands immediate fund releases, payment clearances within 15 days, and a rollback of ‘anti-poor’ tweaks. As the sun set, participants remained firm, turning the protest into an overnight vigil. Political observers note this could snowball into statewide agitation if ignored.
With elections looming, the party aims to reclaim its rural base. ‘This is just the beginning,’ warned organizers. The coming days will test the government’s resolve – and the opposition’s momentum.
