Tamil Nadu’s government is taking bold steps to tackle the state’s surging electricity needs. In a major policy shift, authorities have decided to resurrect the long-stalled Ennore Thermal Expansion Project. This move comes amid persistent power shortages that have plagued the region, especially during peak summer months. The Ennore Thermal Power Station, located on the outskirts of Chennai, has been a cornerstone of the state’s energy infrastructure for decades. The expansion project, initially proposed years ago, aimed to add significant capacity to bolster the grid. However, environmental concerns and legal hurdles had shelved it. Now, with demand outpacing supply, the revival signals a return to thermal power as a reliable baseload source. Officials estimate the expansion could generate an additional 1,200 MW, enough to support millions of homes.
