KOLKATA: In a scathing attack on the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress government, BJP leader Agnimitra Paul has declared that women in West Bengal remain profoundly unsafe throughout the TMC’s tenure. Speaking at a press conference amid rising concerns over women’s safety, Paul highlighted a disturbing pattern of violence and neglect that has plagued the state under Mamata’s rule.
Paul, a prominent BJP figure and former MP, pointed to numerous high-profile cases of atrocities against women, from brutal rapes to daylight murders, that have shocked the nation. ‘From the moment Mamata Banerjee assumed power, promises of safety for our mothers, sisters, and daughters have rung hollow,’ she asserted. The actor-turned-politician accused the administration of shielding perpetrators, many allegedly linked to the ruling party, while victims are intimidated into silence.
Recent incidents, including the horrific Sandeshkhali violence where women were paraded and assaulted, have reignited national outrage. Paul criticized the state police for their inaction and alleged complicity, stating, ‘The law enforcement machinery has been weaponized against the innocent and paralyzed against TMC goons.’ She demanded a thorough overhaul of the state’s law and order apparatus.
The BJP leader’s remarks come as West Bengal grapples with a surge in crimes against women. Official data reveals a sharp rise in reported cases of rape, molestation, and domestic violence since 2011, when TMC swept to power. Paul called for central intervention, urging the deployment of central forces to restore order and protect vulnerable citizens.
‘Mamata didi’s government has failed spectacularly on women’s safety. It’s time for accountability,’ Paul concluded, rallying supporters for upcoming electoral battles. Her outspoken critique underscores the BJP’s aggressive strategy to corner the TMC on governance failures ahead of key polls.
