In a significant revelation about Bihar’s legislative spending, state minister Bijendra Prasad Yadav disclosed that Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) collectively expended ₹3,633 crore on developmental schemes over the past five years. This figure underscores the substantial role lawmakers play in grassroots infrastructure and welfare initiatives across the state.

Speaking at a recent assembly session, Yadav highlighted how these funds have been channeled into critical areas such as road construction, school upgrades, healthcare facilities, and rural electrification. ‘Every MLA’s area development fund has been pivotal in transforming villages into vibrant hubs of progress,’ he emphasized, detailing the meticulous allocation process overseen by the state government.

The disclosure comes amid ongoing debates on fiscal accountability in Bihar, where public funds are scrutinized for maximum impact. Data from the finance department indicates that annual disbursements have steadily increased, peaking in the last fiscal year to ensure no constituency lags behind in development metrics.

Critics, however, point to challenges in implementation, including delays due to bureaucratic hurdles and local corruption allegations. Yadav countered these concerns by announcing stricter monitoring mechanisms, including digital tracking of projects and third-party audits to enhance transparency.

This spending spree reflects Bihar’s renewed focus on localized development post-2020 assembly elections. With opposition parties demanding detailed breakdowns, the government has promised a comprehensive white paper soon. As Bihar strides towards better infrastructure, these funds represent a key lever in the state’s economic revival narrative, promising tangible benefits for millions of residents.
