A Sikh Nagar Kirtan in South Auckland was controversially halted by a far-right group, leading to a significant public backlash and online sharing of incident videos. The religious procession, proceeding along Great South Road, was intentionally obstructed by individuals performing a traditional Maori haka, thereby preventing its continuation.
Brian Tamaki, a leader of the Destiny Church, released a video claiming his supporters were acting to ‘safeguard New Zealand’s identity,’ making unverified accusations against the Sikh participants. This rhetoric has been widely condemned for targeting a minority community and promoting division. According to the Nagar Kirtan organizers, the procession had obtained all necessary permits from official bodies. They described the disruption as an unfortunate and unwelcome interference with a sacred event intended for prayer and community bonding.
New Zealand political figures have largely condemned the incident. MP Priyanca Radhakrishnan emphasized that New Zealand is a diverse nation and that no one has the authority to question the belonging of any community, including the Sikh population. Maori MPs, including Oriini Kaipara and Marama Davidson, strongly criticized the use of the haka as a tool for intimidation and hate speech, stressing that it misrepresented Maori culture and values. They underscored the importance of unity and respect within New Zealand society.
The incident has prompted diplomatic engagement. Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has requested the Indian government to raise the issue with New Zealand authorities, advocating for the right to practice religion freely. Shiromani Akali Dal leader Sukhbir Singh Badal has also appealed to India’s External Affairs Minister to ensure the safety and rights of the Sikh diaspora. The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee president, Harjinder Singh Dhami, expressed strong disapproval, stating that obstructing a peaceful religious gathering goes against the core tenets of Sikhism and urged both governments to ensure a secure environment for religious observances.
