New Delhi has issued a strong advisory for Indian citizens traveling to China, emphasizing the need for caution due to recent incidents of alleged harassment. The move comes after a woman from Arunachal Pradesh was reportedly detained for an extended period at Shanghai airport, leading India to seek guarantees from China against such treatment of its nationals. Reports indicate the detained individual, a UK resident, was questioned disrespectfully and told to seek a Chinese passport, despite holding a valid visa for her onward journey to Japan. This development is seen as an unfortunate setback to recent efforts to mend ties between the two Asian giants, including the resumption of direct flights and high-level diplomatic engagements aimed at managing border issues. India has consistently asserted its sovereignty over Arunachal Pradesh and has lodged strong protests against any perceived territorial claims or actions by China, such as issuing stapled visas or renaming regions. The government expects China to adhere to international travel norms and prevent selective targeting or detention of Indian travelers at its airports.
