A catastrophic fire engulfed a high-rise building in Hong Kong on Wednesday, leading to the tragic loss of 13 lives and numerous injuries. The inferno, which started in the afternoon, spread with alarming speed via bamboo scaffolding and construction netting that surrounded the residential complex. As darkness fell, intense flames and thick smoke spewed from numerous apartment windows, forcing officials to escalate the emergency response to the maximum level 5.

Emergency services confirmed that nine people were pronounced dead at the scene, while four others succumbed to their injuries later in hospital. Roughly 700 residents were successfully evacuated and relocated to emergency shelters. Visuals from the incident depicted at least five buildings alight simultaneously, creating a dramatic scene against the night sky. It has been reported that many of the individuals caught in the blaze were senior citizens. The incident brings into sharp relief the safety implications of using bamboo scaffolding, a practice the government has planned to phase out for public projects due to ongoing safety concerns. Investigations are underway to determine the cause of the fire and the overall damage caused.
